1. Avoid dead-end questions; ask questions instead that require more of an answer than "yes" or "no." Start with "Why, how, where, what kind of . . ."

Start with non-controversial questions. A good place to start with is the person's background. This allows you and your narrator to become comfortable, make eye contact, etc.
Don't let periods of silence fluster you. Give the person a chance to think of what he/she wants to add before you hustle into the next question.
Don't worry if your questions are not as beautifully phrased as you would like them to be for posterity. A few fumbled questions will help put your narrator at ease.
Don't interrupt a good story because you have thought of a question or because your narrator is straying from the planned outline. If the information is pertinent, let the person continue, but jot down your question so you will remember to ask it later.
If your narrator does stray into non-pertinent subjects, try to pull him/her back as quickly as possible. Example: "Before we move on, I'd like to find out . . ."
It is often hard for a narrator to describe persons. An easy way to begin is to ask him to describe the person's appearance.
Interviewing is one time when a negative approach can be more effective than a positive one. Ask about the negative aspects of a situation. Example: In asking about a person, do not begin with a glowing description. You will get a more lively answer if you start out in the negative. "Despite the mayor's reputation for good works, I hear he was a very difficult man for his immediate employees to get along with."
Try to establish at every important point in the story where the narrator was or what his or her role was in this event, in order to indicate how much is eye-witness information and how much based on reports of others. "Where were you at the time of the Oklahoma Bombing?"
Do not challenge accounts you think may be inaccurate. Instead, try to develop as much information as possible that can be used by later researchers in establishing what probably happened.
Do tactfully point out to your narrator that there is a different account or contradictory information of what he or she is describing, if there is.
Try to avoid "off the record" information, the times when your narrator asks you to turn off the recorder while he tells you a good story. Ask if you can you record the whole thing and promise that you will erase that portion if the narrator asks you to after further consideration. Then keep your promise.
Don't switch the recorder off and on. It is much better to waste a little tape on irrelevant material than to call attention to the tape recorder by a constant on-off operation.
Interviews usually work out better if there is no one present except the narrator and the interviewer.
Do end the interview at a reasonable time. An hour-and-a-half is probably maximum. First, you must protect your narrator against over-fatigue: second, you will be tired even if the narrator isn't.
Don't use the interview to show off your own knowledge, vocabulary, charm, or other abilities.

With a recipe makeover, she could create a better oat bar - one just as delicious - but with ingredients a cardiologist would love.
Now five years later, Bobo's Oat Bars are sold in stores coast-to-coast, with sales of $500,000 annually. In 2008 so far, the company's 5,000-square-foot kitchen/packaging/shipping facility in Boulder has shipped 400,000-plus oat bars in nine flavors to customers across the nation. "If I can do it, anybody can," Stafford said. Until Bobo's Bars came to be, she had "zero experience." After graduating from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a degree in history, she worked as a paralegal but retired from the working world when she got married. "ê spent the 10 years of my marriage playing tennis." The demands of single motherhood and dislike of catering stoked her ambition. "When I got divorced I had to make some money, and I didn't want to go work at a bank," she said.
When Stafford came up with the oat-bar idea, she went to her kitchen and got cooking. Her experimentation soon yielded a tasty and healthy treat. The oat bars are vegan and wheat-free and have substitutes for the original less-than-wholesome ingredients.She enlisted an artist friend to design a label and developed four variations of the bar, including the original flavor, coconut, cranberry and chocolate. Her first move was to offer her product to a select number of local shops. The managers at the Brewing Market, Boulder Co-op, Lucky's and Lolita's agreed to stock the bars, and customers bought them. Bobo's was in business. Stafford got going with a small-business loan and then expanded slowly, keeping the financial risk minimal. "As sales grew, I borrowed more and paid off more," she said.
About six months later, Stafford approached the bakery buyer at the local Whole Foods, and the response was unexpected. "The buyer said to me, 'I have been buying your bars at the Co-op. I wondered when you'd bring them here. '"With that welcome, she made the leap to the big time. Before getting into Whole Foods, Stafford had to tweak her packaging to make it freezer safe, and include FDA-mandated nutritional information and proper UPC codes on the label. She learned the specifics of running her own business as needed. "You figure it out as you go," she said. "I got advice, attended conferences. I asked questions. In Boulder, the natural-food manufacturers are a tight little circle. Everybody helps each other."
One marketing tactic she employed early on was in-store product demos to introduce consumers directly to the distinct flavor and consistency of the Bobo Oat Bar - moist and chewy with more of a bakery flavor than the standard foil-wrapped energy bar. What immediately sets her bar apart, she said, is the clear package, which makes it seem like more of a home-baked treat than other oatmeal-containing competitors on the grocery shelf. She also thinks the taste helps. "I hired demo teams and did demos personally every single weekend. I was convinced if customers ate one bite of a Bobo's bars, they would buy it because they are so yummy. "They are also healthy. One 3-ounce bar contains two servings of heart-healthy oatmeal. The bars are sweetened with sucanat (unrefined cane sugar) and brown rice syrup and are low on the glycemic index. "We call our bars a bowl of oatmeal to go," Stafford said. To spread the word, she also took her treat on the road, attending the natural-products show Expo West and coffee trade shows.
By 2005, Bobo's Oat Bars were stocked in regional Whole Foods and Vitamin Cottages and picked up for distribution in the Rocky Mountain area by UNFI, a natural-foods distributor. In 2007, UNFI East started distributing the bars to natural grocers throughout the eastern part of the United States, from Florida to Maine. In December 2008, UNFI West brought Bobo's to the Pacific coast. The ever-increasing sales have meant that instead of procuring raw ingredients from a broker as Stafford did at the start, she shifted to buying directly from the manufacturers at a better price. Her staff has expanded to six, including four bakers, and baking goes on daily to keep up with demand.
Stafford now focuses on developing new bar flavors at a rate of about one a year, and she also handles direct sales to coffee shops and smoothie stores nationwide. Thanks to her efforts, Bobo's Oat Bars are now in Nordstrom coffee shops, Seattle-based Emerald City and Smoothie King, a chain of 900 stores based in Louisiana. Jamie Stoller is the manager of the Brewing Market in the Basemar Shopping Center, and she said her customers are steady consumers of Bobo's Oat Bars. "Many of them can't eat wheat, and they are grateful for something that suits their diet. "As for the person who started it all, Alex (still known as Bobo to her mother) is 19 and attends college in San Francisco. Stafford sends her Bobos bars by the case to share with her roommates. Like her mother, Bobo's favorite is the peanut butter bar. But among the customers for Bobo's Oat Bars, all flavors are a hit, which means business, even in budget-constrained times, is brisk.
"In this down economy, people are still buying oat bars," Beryl Stafford said. "That's a good thing."

The company provides software and data-organization solutions to fire protection and EMS services, including automated dispatch, billing, field data collection, mobile communications, and scheduling and deployment planning products. ZOLL Data Systems is a subsidiary of Chelmsford, Mass.-based ZOLL Medical Corp.

REDEVELOPMENT REVIEW: A Boulder developer is moving ahead to resubmit a concept proposal to redevelop the dormant Army Reserve Training Center at 4640 Table Mesa Drive in South Boulder.Local developer Peter Stainton has proposed a variety of residential housing types on the 4.7 acre site, including row houses, duplexes and single-family homes totaling 43 units. The units would be accessed off of Table Mesa and Tantra drives. The proposal would require a rezoning from low-density residential to medium-density residential. Stainton submitted a similar concept plan with 40 units in 2006 with access off of Table Mesa Drive. At its review in early 2007, Boulder Planning Board did not support the proposal and suggested creating a concept plan that provided access from Tantra Drive. The board also wanted to see a more compatible interface with the existing single-family homes to the west.The Boulder Planning Board is scheduled to review the project during a public hearing at its regular meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, in the City Council Chambers, 1777 Broadway.
BAIRD MOVES: National wealth-management firm Robert W. Baird & Co. has moved its downtown Boulder offices from the Canyon Center to One Boulder Plaza.Baird signed a lease for 5,310 square feet of space at 1301 Canyon Blvd., Suite 220. It moved from 1881 9th St. "Our lease had come up, and we were in the market for a space that could further enhance our image in the Boulder community," said Daniel Palm, a financial adviser for the company. "Now we're in a premium office space in One Boulder Plaza."Palm said the company is growing as other financial firms struggle in the industry. It is recruiting more employees. The Boulder office, managed by Richard Palm, has seven employees.The new space for Baird is owned and operated by W.W. Reynolds, and it was previously occupied by UBS Financial Services, which moved to 1801 13th St., Suite 100, also owned by Reynolds.
ARCHITECT MOVES: DTJ Design Inc. is moving its headquarters across town.The Boulder-based architecture, planning and landscape architecture firm signed a lease for 8,000 square feet of office space at 3101 Iris Ave. The company is downsizing from about 27,000 square feet at the Canyon Center, 1881 9th St., in downtown Boulder. DTJ founding principal Tom Thorpe said the company is adjusting "like every company" related to the real estate industry. The firm has been reducing staff during the past five years and needed less space. It now employs 35 people. Thorpe said the company is expanding in other areas of the world. New projects are under way in China, the United Arab Emirates and Europe. DTJ's new office space previously was occupied by First National Bank of Colorado. The Fort Collins-based bank sold the 22,575-square-foot office building at 3101 Iris Ave. to Boulder developer Lou Della Cava a year ago. Della Cava has filled most of the space - gradually relieving the bank of its office lease - with VisionLink leasing 4,000 square feet, HealthLinks leasing 4,800 square feet and DTJ leasing 8,000 square feet. About 6,000 square feet remains available for lease. First National Bank continues to lease and occupy the 13,000-square-foot bank building with 12 drive-through lanes next door at 3033 Iris Ave., which Della Cava also owns.
EXPANSION AND LEASE: Boulder-based light manufacturer TerraLUX Inc. is expanding its space in the building its president and chief executive Tony Catalano owns at 4725 Nautilus Court South.TerraLUX will increase its leased space in the 21,940-square-foot building - from about 4,000 square feet to about 7,000 square feet. Room for the expansion was made by Team ProMark LLC vacating about 10,000 square feet of space in the building in a move to Longmont. Catalano said the TerraLUX business continues to grow, and it recently received an undisclosed amount of venture capital financing. The building also gained a new tenant with Bobo's Oat Bars. BOULDER - Bobo's Oat Bars has increased its bottom line marketing its oat bars while participating in a program designed for entrepreneurs selling natural and organic products. Simply Delicious LLC and Organic Program is catering to a variety of local businesses like Bobo's Oat Bars that sell natural products ranging from sunscreen and organic T-shirts to food products such as sauces, spiced nuts and oat bars.
Since 2005, the center has offered clients advice on growing their businesses through its Natural and Organic Program. The center allows up to eight companies at a time to participate in the program where the needs of each company are met through benefits tailored for the specific business. There are 20 companies that have graduated from the program since its inception and 10 in the past year.
Lisa Bell, who with Julie Dye co-manages the center's Natural and Organic Program manager, said companies that join the program need to have a product or service in existence and fall under the natural product category. Clients in Boulder County pay $750 a month while those outside the county pay $1,200. The companies are often small startups with one to five employees and sales in the hundreds of thousands. Program participants receive advice in areas like manufacturing distribution, marketing, package design, overall business strategy and planning.
"It's a high-touch approach to helping companies with their business needs," Bell said. "We match a team of specific volunteer advisers who have relevant business expertise to that client. We meet once every two to three weeks as a group and go through a list of topics determined ahead of time the client wants to work through. It takes anywhere from two to six months to graduate, but that depends on the company and objective. "Beryl Stafford, founder and owner of Bobo's Oat Bars in Boulder, said the program has helped her business in a number of areas such as business development, market research analysis and strategies; customer and product placement; cash flow projections, budgets, packaging, manufacturing and online marketing efforts.
"Those are many of the issues I had watching my business grow," she said. "They have helped me with those."Stafford, who has been in business for five years, employs five people and a part-time bookkeeper. She has been in the program for three months and recently launched an e-mail survey offering a 15 percent discount on a purchase if the customer completed the survey. "It generated lots of online sales," she said. "We got a lot of research data out of it. "During the 10-day survey in early August, Stafford believes her company tripled its Internet sales.
Goddess Garden used the program to launch the company's natural sunscreen product that has 70 percent certified organic ingredients. Nova Covington, the company's president, said the program helped her prepare for the National Products Expo West trade show in Anaheim, Calif. "They helped mainly with strategy for the trade show and marketing," she said. "They connected me with national sales managers and marketing managers. They helped me navigate the natural products industry so that we could successfully launch our new SPF (sun protection factor) 30 sunscreen." Goddess Garden, a Boulder-based organic skin-care company, finished last April after about five months in the program. Prior to working with the center, the business had a national retail business selling to spas and boutiques, but wanted to expand to natural grocers.
Another natural and organic program graduate - The Organic Dish - learned how to identify customers, define its market and find out why people want to buy the company's product. The Boulder business sells organic frozen dinners customers cook at home.The center helped The Organic Dish's co-founders Beckie and Toby Hemmerling with expansion plans in Denver and shipping nationwide. They were steered more into expanding their Denver and Boulder market operations where they would see more growth compared to a nationwide effort. The business spent four months in the program in 2008.
"They helped us with strategic issues surrounding our business," said Toby Hemmerling. "They are like solution brokers - they put you in touch with people who can solve the problems and know the industry issues. "Bell said some companies have the potential for sales of at least $2 million to $3 million per year. A few program graduates come back to the center for professional financial expertise. The center helps businesses prepare a financial pitch geared to angel investors or venture capital firms if they are ready for that.
While the people at the center are available to answer questions by phone, if a client needs help with a full financial plan or other issues that require full advisory, the client signs up and pays the monthly fee. Graduates contact the center with questions after completing the program."They are always there for us," said Beryl Stafford, President of Simply Delicious LLC dba Bobo's Oat Bars. BOULDER - In the natural products industry, the word "natural" can pertain to just about anything: natural-flavored cheese, all-natural ingredients and natural enzymes.
But even arsenic is natural, and most people agree that it isn't good for the body.With the incessant controversy surrounding the issue, the buzzword needs to be defined and regulated, local natural product executives said at the Boulder County Business Report's CEO Roundtable about natural products on April 20.Many participants agreed the regulations or definitions need to come from governing bodies like the Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Agriculture or the Food and Drug Administration.
As idealistic as it is to think the natural products industry will police itself and define natural and organic in a uniform way, many participants said it won't happen in part because there's too much money at stake. But the debate is something that Beryl Stafford, president of Boulder-based Simplydelicious LLC dba Bobo's Oat Bars, thinks about every day. Stafford said she struggles with using the word "natural" because of the sometimes greenwashed negative connotation. And though all but one of her ingredients are organic, she can't claim that tag and get the USDA stamp of approval.

They agreed that it's an uphill battle, but, despite the hurdles, one they need to face.As with many industries, the key to educating people and helping them make informed decisions about what is and isn't natural or organic is transparency, said Mike Fitzgerald, Cooper Tea Co.'s chief operating officer.The integrity and authenticity that is gained by being transparent is something companies can't buy, which should help separate the good companies from the bad. But as smaller companies grow and expand in the natural products industry, they increase the chance of being labeled as a "big guy.""If you're big in the natural industry, you're bad," Feeney said. She said companies need to shed the "poor is pure" mentality to keep themselves from being continually plagued by their own success.
Though well behind the human-oriented natural products industry, Marty Grosjean, Only Natural Pet Foods' president and chief executive officer, said people are realizing the importance of natural pet food as well.But the natural pet-product sector faces many of the same hurdles, like the natural versus not debate, that the human-oriented sector does. Grosjean said, though, that the pet sector has the luxury of riding the coattails of the rest of the industry. Despite the hardships the industry faces, the Boulder Valley, and specifically Boulder, remains a go-to for natural-product startups.

"It is a lot bigger than we understand or we realize," Bell said.
