ASHLAND, OH - Dr. Ofer Reizes, the Laura J. Fogarty Endowed Chair for Uterine Cancer Research at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute, will speak on “Clinical problems and drug development for gynecological cancers” at Ashland University.

The talk, which is free and open to the public, is set for Thursday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Ronk Lecture Hall in the Schar College of Education. The talk is the inaugural presentation of a new seminar series titled “Lab to Marketplace seminars” sponsored by the Science Scholars Program in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Morgan Center for Entrepreneurial Studies in the Dauch College of Business and Economics. The Lab to Marketplace seminars will bring speakers to the AU campus who are engaged in translational research, research that applies scientific knowledge to developing new medical treatments and other applications.

Dr. Reizes is on staff in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, and director of Research Core Services for the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute and also serves as director of Skills Development for the NIH Center for Accelerated Innovations at Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Reizes received his Ph.D. in molecular pharmacology at UT-Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He went on to complete a post-doctoral fellowship at The Children’s Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Reizes was recruited by Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals Inc. in 2001 to lead drug discovery efforts in obesity and metabolic diseases, progressing several obesity targets from early discovery to pre-clinical evaluation.

In 2006, Dr. Reizes joined the Cleveland Clinic, where he studies the interface between obesity and cancer. Specifically, his research focuses on women’s cancer and the impact of obesity on cancer stem cells. The research team has developed unique cell models for identifying therapeutics strategies for cancer and particularly chemoresistant tumors.

Dr. Reizes research has been published in Cell, the Journal of Clinical Investigation, the Journal of Experimental Medicine and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. He has presented at multiple national and international meetings including the Endocrine Society and the American Diabetes Association. He is a co-inventor of a patent titled “Methods and Reagents for Regulating Obesity” and has consulted for several biotechnology companies.

The Lab to Marketplace seminar series is supported by the National Science Foundation through Ashland University’s NSF S-STEM grant, “Science Scholars Program: Opening the Science Career Pipeline Through Enhanced Engagement and Support.” This five-year grant provides scholarships and academic support for academically talented science students with financial need. The program is designed to provide renewable scholarships ranging from $4,000 to $10,000 annually to students with unmet financial need declaring a major in the natural sciences and planning to pursue a career in science. As well as scholarships, the Science Scholars Program provides students with peer- and faculty-mentoring and additional programming through a dedicated career-coach and the Center for Academic Support to help them succeed in their education at AU. Further information about the program and the application process can be found at https://www.ashland.edu/cas/science-scholars.
